2010-10-19 - Bayern Munchen vs CFR Cluj
A Sports Betting Pick by ROzsolt
Football: UEFA Champions League : Group stage
Venue: Allianz Arena, Munich
Tuesday 19th October – Kickoff time: 21:45 GMT+2
Bayern Munchen
FC Bayern Munchen will be looking to make it six home wins in a row in the UEFA Champions League when they welcome CFR 1907 Cluj to Bavaria. Louis van Gaal's men recorded four straight home successes en route to last season's final and opened this campaign with a 2-0 victory against AS Roma.
In fact, Bayern appears to play better in CL than in Bundesliga, where they are only 9th. However there are some signs of improvement, a 3-0 victory against Hannover showed the strength that Bayern are capable to develop in front of their own fans despite having several injured players.
Bayern's most recent encounter with a Romanian club came in the 2008-09 CL group stage against FC Steaua Bucureşti. Daniel Van Buyten earned them a 1-0 away win before Miroslav Klose (2) and Luca Toni struck in a 3-0 success in Munich.
Luis Van Gaal will have to start the match without his star players as Robben and Robery are still not recovered, while Klose and Van Bommel joined the injury list. However, the Dutch coach does have some good news as well, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ivica Olic has been declared fit to play after suffering some minor injuries.
CFR Cluj
Romanian champions are finding themselves in great difficulty in the championship, they've just lost their 5th game after 11 stages. It is like Cluj have been struck with the same disease that is spreading through Europe, affecting teams like Lyon, Liverpool or Shalke.
CFR Cluj made a nice start in this edition of the CL defeating FC Basel at home, then travelled to Rome where they succeeded their best performance from the clubs history, a 2-1 win two years ago. The Romanians came very close to repeat that performance, striker Lacina Traore striking the post two times when the score was 0-0, however the outcome of the match is well known.
While CFR have never played Bundesliga opposition before, the hosts are unbeaten in six matches against Romanian teams with three wins; two of their three draws came in Munich.
Central midfielder Gabriel Muresan is injured and probably won't travel to Germany. This is a huge loss for CFR, the Romanian being an important piece in their squad.
The Betting Verdict
CFR played two times in their history in the UCL, losing three games and winning one on their travels. An interesting fact is that every loss was with one goal margin, 1-0 in Bordeaux, 2-1 at Stamford Bridge and in the previous stage against AS Roma, 2-1 as well.
They proved that they have the ability to battle neck and neck with European giants but they need that extra something to pull off a positive result.
Of course the obvious outcome would be a home win, but let's not forget Bayern's difficulties in the beginning of the season and the German side also miss their best players.
Can CFR Cluj do better than Rome in Munich? I think the answer is yes, I don't see the visitors suffering a severe defeat.
