Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur

Liverpool

After a couple of big performances in the Cup competitions, Liverpool will be hoping to bring that level into the Premier League where they still have a bit of ground to make up on sides in the top 4 and a Champions League place. They were impressive at Wolves during the week, but this is a far tougher test of their credentials.

Liverpool are 7th in the Premier League table, but they remain just 4 points behind Chelsea in 4th place at the time of writing (before the Chelsea-Manchester United game). It is really their form at Anfield that has prevented them from being higher up the table, having recorded a 4-7-0 record here, scoring 14 goals and conceding just 8.

While being unbeaten at Anfield is still impressive, too many draws will not get them into the elite of European football and I think Kenny Dalglish realises that. Liverpool have lost just 1 of their last 7 games in all competitions, and have won 2 of their last 3 games since that awful performance at Bolton Wanderers. The Reds have won just 4 of their last 11 games at Anfield in all competitions.

Luis Suarez has returned from his 8 game ban for racial abuse, but it looks like he may have to settle for a place on the bench for this game. Kenny Dalglish has a full squad to choose from apart from long-term absentee Lucas, and Steven Gerrard could be back after being rested at Wolves.

Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Redknapp's trial for tax evasion has yet to be resolved, but it has not slowed down Tottenham Hotspur who look very much like a team that will be playing in the Champions League again next season. While winning the title looks a step too far for them at this stage, they are still very much hanging on to the coat-tails of the leading Manchester clubs.

Spurs will begin this game in 3rd place in the Premier League, 8 points behind Manchester City at the top of the table, and 9 points clear of 5th placed Arsenal with a trip to the Emirates looming at the end of the month. Gone are the days of the team being a bit of a soft touch away from White Hart Lane as they are 6-2-3 away from home this season, scoring 20 goals and conceding 15. Only Manchester United have earned more away wins so far this season.

They have now lost just 1 of their last 12 games in all competitions, and that coming in the most unfortunate of situations at Manchester City in a game they perhaps deserved to win. Spurs have lost 1 of their last 5 away games in all competitions, although they have only won 1 of their last 4 away games in the League.

William Gallas is out, while new signing, Ryan Nelson, is likely out too. Kyle Walker should take his place at right back, but Rafael Van der Vaart and Aaron Lennon are both doubts. Another new signing, Louis Saha, should be in the squad, but Jermain Defoe is another likely absentee.

Head to Head

Tottenham took advantage of a ten-man Liverpool earlier this season by completing a 4-0 win over them at White Hart Lane.

That means Spurs have actually won 4 of the last 5 League games against Liverpool overall, including a 0-2 win here towards the end of the season last season.

Liverpool had won 4 of their last 5 League games at Anfield against Spurs before last seasons loss, and had been unbeaten in 16 League games here against them.

Prediction

Liverpool, despite being odds against, look remarkably short against one of the better sides in the Premier League, especially considering the issues the Reds have had at Anfield all season.

Tottenham are a side that are capable of causing all of the teams in the League problems, and I think they will be able to do the same to a Liverpool side that has played a lot of games in recent weeks. The likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric will help the side create chances and I think they are good enough to avoid defeat here and maintain their push for a top 3 finish.

In saying that, I was stunned that Tottenham can be found at good odds to do so and I think it screams value, especially with Liverpool failing to win almost 67% of their home games.

It is a shame that Van der Vaart and Lennon are both major doubts as I would have been persuaded to back Spurs to win this game with them being the last side to win at Anfield in the Premier League, but I'll take a bit of caution.

At odds against, I can only pick Spurs here.
