This is a surprise as nobody expected the semi final would see the likes of Hungarian M. Fucsovics and Italian M. Berrettini taking on each other.
Fucsovics
Last season was the best for Fucsovics in his career. He has reached 35th in the ATP list near the end of last season and at the start of this season. That is also his best career rankings. Last month his rankings fell a bit and he arrived in this tournament as the world no 47. Last year he won one title when he captured the ATP Geneva by beating German P. Gojowczyk.
Before the start of this tournament he played in three tournaments and in each of them he exited at the second round. In Doha, he was eliminated in the second round by N. Djokovic, in Syndey by Australian J. Milman. At the Australian Open he was shown the exited by B. Coric. So reaching the semi finals in Sofia is also the best result in his career.
Berrettini:
Near the end of last year the 22 year old reached the best ranking in his career when he was 52nd in the World. Since the beginning of the year the ranking did niot changed much and he dropped one spot to be at 53rd in the ranking list. He has won one ATP title which happened at the tournamened in Gstaad last season. In the final he got the better of R. Bautista-Agut.
At the start of the year his win loss ratio was two wins and three defeats. One of those wins cam ein the Davis Cup. He reached the semni finals after coming from behind to beat F. Verdasco. The Spaniard was favourite to win the match and won the first set convincingly. However Berrettini did not give up and thanks largely to his excellent first serve he came back and won the match.
