Taking two of three from the New York Yankees will feel like a positive step for the American League Central leading Cleveland Guardians (36-28), but they remain just 2 games clear of the surprising Chicago White Sox. There is no rest for the Guardians who will have travelled from New York to Arlington for another series that begins this Friday.
Next up for the Guardians is a set against the Texas Rangers (30-32) who are just 2.5 games out of the lead in the competitive American League West.
The Rangers had won five in a row as they closed in on returning to 0.500 for the season, but they were beaten in the last game against the St Louis Cardinals to miss out on the sweep. Unlike the Guardians, Texas have had a day of rest to prepare for this game and they will hand the ball to Kumar Rocket for the opener of this set.
Kumar Rocker has a 2-5 record and a 3.54 ERA in eleven appearances in 2026 and ten of those have been in starts. The third year pitcher in the Major League had a tough sophomore campaign in 2025, but Kumar Rocker has begun this season with a bit more authority on the mound.
May proved to be a positive month for Kumar Rocker who did not give up a run in three of the last four appearances made- the exception was a start in which Rocker allowed four runs in 5 Innings thrown, while the one game he did not start, Kumar Rocker threw over 7 Innings in relief.
The Guardians will counter by giving the ball to Parker Messick who has begun the season in stellar form and has put together a 6-1 record and 2.21 ERA from twelve starts made. This is only the second season in the Major Leagues and Parker Messick has already made more starts in 2026 compared with his rookie season.
There are always going to be some ups and downs for a young pitcher, but Parker Messick has shown his confidence by bouncing back in his last two starts in May. Earlier in the month he had been knocked around at times, but Messick allowed a single run across his last two starts and those covered almost 11 Innings.
Last season, the Rangers won the opening four games against the Cleveland Guardians, although the latter finished the year with consecutive wins against this American League rival.
Prediction
Both starting pitchers have been playing really well in the last few outings and that will give the Cleveland Guardians and Texas Rangers confidence.
Out of the two teams, the Rangers have been playing with a bit more authority and they are rested, but the Cleveland Guardians have rallied behind young pitcher Parker Messick and may take the first of this set to be played over the weekend.
