A Sports Betting Pick by Auls

Wolves v West Brom
Football: English Championship
Sunday 20th September 2026 - Kick Off 12pm
This game is live on TV

Wolves

The League Cup run came to an end at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Wednesday evening, but the Wolves board and the supporters will know that the priority this season is a strong Championship campaign. Cesar Peixoto has made sure Wolves have made a solid start to life back in the second tier of English Football, but Sunday is more about pride and bragging rights than anything else.

Three points matter and that is the target for Wolves and earning those at the expense of the biggest rivals will make it that much more of an enjoyable international break. The side are 7th in the Championship standings, but the League Cup run means Wolves have a game in hand over all above them and they are just 3 points behind early leaders West Ham United. A 1-1-0 record has been produced at Molineux in the Championship as Wolves prepare to host on Sunday lunchtime.

Wolves scored a very late winner at Bramall Lane last Sunday, but that is now the only win in 4 games played in all competitions and they have been beaten twice in that run. They have scored at least twice in all 3 home games played in all competitions and Wolves have won 2 of those fixtures, including most recently when thumping Stoke City 4-1.

West Brom

There was a considerable fear that West Brom were going to be dropping into the third tier of English Football for just the third time in the history of the club, but James Morrison rallied them to finish 4 points clear of the relegation zone. The interim tag was removed from his role, and James Morrison is expected to have West Brom perhaps challenging for a top eight finish.

That would be a considerable climb from finishing 21st last season, which was also West Brom's lowest League finish since 2000, but this is a club that have spent more time in the top flight than not in their history. The Baggies spent eight consecutive years in the Premier League that ended in 2018 and they have been back for one year since, while James Morrison has West Brom sitting in 4th place in the very early Championship table this season.

West Brom were beaten in the League Cup Second Round at Newcastle United and followed up with a defeat at Middlesbrough, but they are unbeaten in 4 League games and have picked up 8 points from a possible 12. After those consecutive defeats in the North East, West Brom have won 0-1 at Derby County and that means they have secured 5 wins from the last 8 on their travels in all competitions.

Head to Head

These two rivals last met in the FA Cup in January 2024 and it was Wolves who left The Hawthorns with a 0-2 win.

The last League meetings came in the 2020/21 season when both Wolves and West Brom played in the Premier League.

West Brom won 2-3 at Molineux in January 2021 and they have won on 4 of the last 5 visits to this ground.

Prediction

James Morrison has been helping West Brom pick up plenty of positive results and they have defied some of the underlying numbers to do that.

The start to this season has built on the strong end to the last campaign and The Baggies will be going into the opening Black Country derby of the season filled with confidence.

West Brom battled to a win at Derby County in the last away game, but it should be said they have given up some big chances in all of the away League games played this season. Wastefulness from Norwich City helped West Brom win at Carrow Road on the opening weekend, but they cannot afford to give Wolves similar chances considering the Premier League quality retained by the home team.

A battling win last weekend has kept Wolves moving in a positive direction under Cesar Peixoto, but the fans will know all about the poor home record against their biggest rivals.

It has been five years since Wolves last hosted West Brom, but the supporters need to avoid bringing their personal anxieties about this fixture into the Stadium. If they can do that, Wolves have shown they have enough about them in the final third to put all of the pressure on the visiting team and it may lead to the home team securing a narrow victory.

Despite the kick off time, the Wolves and West Brom supporters can create a very strong atmosphere and it may be the home supporters who leave with bragging rights.

The Pick :

Wolves 2-1 West Brom
