If you were only assessing Brighton's attacking performance at Stamford Bridge last Sunday, you would give them a high passing grade and suggest the team are going to be capable of improving on the 8th place finish in the Premier League from last season. However, Fabian Hurzeler cannot have been happy with any of the defending as Brighton were beaten 4-3 by Chelsea and an improvement is needed for a successful season to be put together.
The strange part of the defensive performance was that Brighton had begun the season looking really well balanced, which included scoring four goals in beating Aston Villa on the opening weekend. Progress has been made to enter the Conference League Group Stage and Brighton will be returning home this weekend expecting to produce a positive reaction to what they will consider to be a poor result.
Brighton had been unbeaten in 3 games in all competitions and had kept clean sheets in each of those before conceding four goals in West London last weekend. The Seagulls did lose 0-3 at the Amex Stadium in the last Premier League game played here in the 2025/26 season, but that is the only setback in 6 home games in all competitions and Brighton have won 5 of those.
Yasin Ayari and Georginho Rutter are both hoping to be available this weekend, but Kaoru Mitoma may need a few more days. Both Jack Hinshelwood and Yankuba Minteh are hoping to return after the next international break.
Leeds United
There was a definite change in attitude and belief in the Leeds United squad after Daniel Farke tweaked his system last December and they have been largely on a strong run of form since then. Picking up a consistent set of positive results means players will feel unbeatable and Leeds United showed their character in fighting back for a 1-1 draw with Brentford last weekend without being at their very best.
It has been a positive start to the new season for Leeds United who will perhaps fancy a push for European Football to continue the rebuild of this once very proud club. The first ambition will be to secure Premier League Football for another campaign and Leeds United have already placed 4 points on the board thanks to an opening away win at the City Ground.
Leeds United followed up that win over Nottingham Forest by beating them in the same Stadium days later, but this time in the League Cup Second Round, and the side have now lost 1 of the last 7 games in all competitions. Last season, Leeds United only lost 8 of the 19 away League games played, but they won just twice and so the opening win at the City Ground will feel important.
Joe Rodon picked up a hamstring issue last week and is set to miss out, while Ilia Gruev is a doubt.
Head to Head

Brighton are unbeaten in 10 at home against Leeds United and have won 7 of the last 8 fixtures when hosting them.
Prediction
Despite the loss last weekend, Brighton will still be in pretty confident mood ahead of the second Premier League game to be played at the Amex Stadium this season.
There is no reason to doubt that Leeds United will be travelling with a lot of confidence within their own squad as they have remained unbeaten through two fixtures and this all points to what should be an entertaining game.
Both Fabian Hurzeler and Daniel Farke want their respective teams to get on the front foot and dictate the tempo of a fixture and that is where home advantage can still be a real factor.
Last season both fixtures ended with home wins and Brighton have a very strong record when hosting Leeds United in this Stadium.
Fabian Hurzeler is missing a couple of key attackers, but Georginio Rutter's potential availability would be a boost. Even without him, Brighton showed they can be very dangerous in the final third last Sunday in the 4-3 loss at Stamford Bridge, and Brighton fans have to be excited about the attacking numbers produced early this season.
That is likely going to see Brighton put a lot of pressure on Leeds United, as Brentford did last week, although it is important for The Seagulls to be more composed in the final third.
Letting Leeds United hang around would be a mistake as this team do not know when they are beaten, but the edge here has to be with Brighton and they can be backed to earn the victory on Saturday afternoon.
