Arsenal
After a tough first half when Arsenal were not quite able to click in the final third, the players were rampant in the second half and the floodgates opened in the thumping win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Fans are getting very excited by what they are seeing from Arsenal, but it is October and prizes are not handed out now.
The away win at Craven Cottage last weekend keeps Arsenal on top of the Premier League table, but the real boost was watching Champions Liverpool suffer another defeat. It all adds up to Arsenal being 3 points clear of Manchester City going into the weekend, but Mikel Arteta has to make sure his team remain focused on the task at hand. The Gunners have a 3-1-0 home record in the Premier League where they have scored 11 goals and conceded 1.
Arsenal's big win over Atletico Madrid extends the run of victories to 6 games in all competitions and there is no doubt that this team is playing with real confidence. Since the 1-1 draw with Manchester City in September, Arsenal have won 3 in a row at the Emirates Stadium in all competitions.
The squad that came together against Atletico Madrid are available again- both Riccardo Calafiori and Leandro Trossard will be pushing for starts.
Crystal Palace
The manager has more experience than the majority of the Crystal Palace squad when it comes to competing in UEFA Club competition and Oliver Glasner certainly knows more than the Football Club in general. Thursday would have been a harsh lesson for Crystal Palace as they were beaten at home by AEK Larnaca, but this is a team that is still expected to be challenging for the trophy at the end of the Conference League run.
Once again, Crystal Palace were punished for a wasteful display at home and it is the form at Selhurst Park that is holding them back in the Premier League too. Despite that, The Eagles are 8th in the standings and just 6 points behind leaders Arsenal, but there is room for improvement. More than half of the points earned by Crystal Palace have been on their travels where they have a 2-1-1 record in the top flight.
Crystal Palace saw a long unbeaten run ended in a 2-1 defeat at Everton just before the October international break and they needed to fight back from 0-2 and 2-3 behind against Bournemouth to earn a draw last weekend. Losing on Thursday will be just a slight concern that the team are in the midst of a sticky patch of form. The side had won 3 games in succession away from Selhurst Park before losing in Everton's new home Stadium earlier this month.
A strong team was selected on Thursday and the key players look to have come through unscathed.
Head to Head
Arsenal picked up four points against Crystal Palace last season, although the dropped points were from the 2-2 draw at home.
Prior to that, Arsenal had beaten Crystal Palace 3 times in a row at home in all competitions, including beating them 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium in the League Cup last season.
Prediction
If this fixture had been the first to be played in October, Crystal Palace would have been entering with a strong run of form and having just beaten Liverpool at home. The confidence would have been surging, while Arsenal had just been looking a little shaky having needed late goals to turn around a 1-0 deficit at Newcastle United and produced a 1-2 win.
That is a key result.
Ever since, Arsenal have looked to be playing with a lot more confidence and the depth they have put together in the attacking areas are paying dividends. There are key players missing, but those stepping up are very much of the quality needed to keep positive results going and Arsenal have been strengthened into a favourite to win the Premier League title.
Mikel Arteta will know that silverware is not handed out in October, but he has to be feeling pretty happy with the results AND the performances over the last few weeks. The crushing win over Atletico Madrid has kept the good times rolling at the Emirates Stadium and the feeling is that Arsenal will have enough in the final third to beat a solid opponent.
As mentioned, things felt different for Crystal Palace earlier in the month, but they conceded late goals in the 2-1 loss at Everton. Another dominant performance last weekend was still not enough to earn the three points against Bournemouth and the Conference League setback has prolonged the run without a victory.
In the last three Premier League games played, Crystal Palace have not defended as well as they would like and that presents a problem when facing Arsenal.
The Gunners are giving very little away, which has been the case in the last couple of seasons, but now they are adding goals to avoid having to sit on narrow leads. At home that has particularly been the case and the selection here is backing Arsenal to expose some of the Crystal Palace defensive issues and score a couple of goals in another winning effort in front of the increasingly excited supporters.
